FIRE RESTORATION

Blast-it-Clean specializes in assisting the Fire Restoration Industry. We offer a cleaning product that is an alternative to the former industry standard. In the past it was standard practice to apply a coating of Kilz coating to cover the soot, char and odor (encapsulation). This option is less costly than eradication, but it has one major drawback. If the surface paint is ever broken, it will allow the smell of the soot and char formerly contained by the Kilz coating to be released into the residence or structure.

Another alternative was the use of pressure washing. This method of cleaning has fallen out of favor due to the rising cost of mold cleaning cases. When you are in a renovation/restoration project, the last thing you want is to introduce a substance that could cause mold.

New technology has allowed the use of alternative blast media to assist in this process. The most common are Baking Soda Cleaning, Dry Ice Cleaning and in some cases ground Corn Cob.

Baking Soda Cleaning:

The use of baking soda as a cleaning medium was created during the Statue of Liberty Renovation from 1984 - 1986. The statue was scheduled to be re-dedicated on July 4, 1986. They needed a cleaning process that would quickly clean the interior of the statue while not damaging the metal structure. To fill this need the baking soda blasting equipment and process were developed.

Baking soda is ideal for removing soot and char. When used it has the added plus of neutralizing the soot and char odors. This process is similar to putting a box of baking soda into your refrigerator to capture odors.

Dry Ice Cleaning:

Dry Ice Cleaning evolved in response to the need for cleaning airplanes and plane parts. The challenge was to develop a cleaning process that did not cause any profile to the metal and leave behind any blast media residue. CO2/Dry Ice Cleaning technology filled these requirements.

This process is generally not as fast as soda cleaning but can be effective. In some applications the benefit of dust free cleaning makes it the logical project choice.

Ground Corn Cobb Cleaning:

This is another alternative that is available. It does not have the odor killing properties of baking soda cleaning, but it can quickly remove soot and char from most surfaces.

How the Insurance Industry Views This Process?

In most industries, change tends to come slowly. The integration of new technologies is normally not a fast process in most industries. The Fire Restoration Industry is no different. The process of eradication versus encapsulation is becoming more accepted as delivering the best odor elimination performance. Insurance industry pricing software for claims management now has line item pricing provisions for this type of cleaning.
