CASE STUDIES - ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION

B & R Insulation - Plaza Reconstruction Project – Garnett Blasting with containment

B & R Insulation hired as the general contractor for the abatement of asbestos in the basement of the Kansas City, Kansas Government Plaza building. The scope of the project required the removal of asbestos and the sandblasting of all structural steel surfaces for inspection. Blast-It-Clean was hired to perform the sandblasting on the structural steel. The challenge on this project was to perform the work while the 12 floors above the basement remained occupied. The architect on the firm specified a low dusting silica free blast media be used on the project. Garnet was the blast media that was utilized on the project. The area that was to be cleaned was broken up into zones for containment purposes. The enclosure was constructed. Multiple 13,500 cfm exhaust fans blowing into a specially designed-.10-micron dust containment bag drove the air handling, and the paint removal process was completed.

J.E. Dunn – Kansas State House Project – Soda Blasting with containment

The basement of the state house was being renovated and converted into usable office space. The original limestone walls needed to be restored and the paint removed from them. The challenge was to perform this work in the basement while the legislature was still in session two floors above. Due to the age of the building and the number of fireplaces in the original design, there were chimney flu’s and openings along the inner walls all throughout the building. The area that was to be cleaned was broken up into zones for containment purposes. The enclosure was constructed. Multiple 13,500 cfm exhaust fans blowing into a specially designed-.10-micron dust containment bag drove the air handling, and the paint removal process was completed.

Overland Concrete – BMA Tower – Starblast Blasting

The architectural design for this project called for the exterior concrete patio to be profiled to expose 80% aggregate. Blast-It-Clean was contracted to perform the profiling after the concrete had been allowed to cure. The challenge of this project was to achieve a consistent look throughout a 5000 square foot patio. The blasting was completed on schedule and the patio had a consistent 80% aggregate finish.

Rau Construction – Board of Trade Building Lofts – Soda Blasting

The top floors of the old Board of Trade Building were being converted into high-end luxury lofts. The design called for the cement ceiling to be exposed in the majority of the ceilings. In addition to the ceilings the finished look called for the brick walls to be exposed. Over the years there had been a significant buildup of soot and char from years of coal burning stoves to heat the facility. Blast-It-Clean performed low-pressure baking soda cleaning to restore the original look of the walls and ceiling. The level of cleaning was so detailed, that we were able to clean the concrete surfaces, without distorting the form lines that were present from the wood forms in the original construction process.

Fogel Anderson – Christ the King Church – Soda Blasting

The church was expanded and renovated. Part of the project called for updating the sanctuary area. The internal walls of the sanctuary were brick. Over the course of the years, the candles that were utilized around the sanctuary had left soot marks on the wall. Due to the nature of the building, any wet cleaning process was not feasible. Blast-It-Clean was brought in to provide low pressure soda blasting to clean the walls. The final cleaning result was a like new finish.
